What is Fisher Cat? 

The Fisher Cats are normally called fishers, it is a small wild animal that lives majorly in the North America. Looking at its name "Fisher Cats" it is among the categories of Mustelid. 

The male Fisher cat weigh between 9 to 14 pounds while the female weigh between 4 to 6 pounds.

This animal is a very good hunter, it climbs anything easily because of its claws and short legs, it also has a very hairy tail and a slender body.

Where Do Fisher Cat live?

Fisher Cat loves staying in the forest where there are numerous trees, it is also versatile and can adapt to any environment, but its choice is always at the forest.

They are very common in the Northern part of the United State, they have bigger territories, and they find joy in forming a group with another Fisher cat. This animal builds their houses in hallow trees or abandoned burrows.

Foods For Fisher Cats

Fisher cats enjoy eating other small animals like rabbits, rodents, squirrels, etc. It also hunts the porcupines successfully; this animal has developed a natural skill for themselves which helps them hunt and consume the porcupines.

How is this possible? it turns the porcupines upside down to get access to the unprotected side. Fisher cats eat other things like fruits, nuts whenever there wasn’t a success in hunting for lower animals.

Behavior and Social Structure

The Fisher cats stay on their own and find it difficult to mate and rear young once. During the dawn, they are always active. They are popularly known for their hunting skill, this animal hunt both on the trees and on the ground. 

they communicate between themselves through screams, hisses, etc. these animals hate being around humans and that is why they feel more comfortable in the forest.

Fisher Cats Reproduction and Lifespan

Fisher cats only mate themselves during the late winter, the egg of the female animal doesn’t implant in the uterus immediately which makes it last about 11 months.

During birth, the female Fisher Cats delivers up to one to seven kits, during the first 8 to 10 weeks the kits stays around their mother until they become independent to hunt on their own.

The life span for this animal is always between 8 to 11 years, although it can also be shorter due to environmental factors.

Fisher Cats and Their Roles

Fisher cats often make sure that their ecosystem is well protected, they help in reducing the population of small animals which comes to destroy or feed on plants.

As smaller animals like rabbit, porcupines can cause damages to trees 

Interaction with Humans

While this animal isolates themselves with humans, the max reproduction of Fisher cats has made it difficult for those who lives around the Fisher cat’s habitats.

People living within these areas must protect their livestock’s, foods, and avoid disposing unwanted food within your premises because this can attract them.

Also educating the communities about the advantages and the disadvantages of this animal and its behaviors will also help to reduce harm within the community.
