Winners, losers, biggest trades, and bold picks for the 2022 NBA draft

Winners, losers, biggest trades, and bold picks for the 2022 NBA draft
The Orlando Magic chose Duke forward Paolo Banchero with the first pick in the 2022 NBA draft. The move was a bit of a surprise because Banchero had never met with the Magic and most people in the league thought that Auburn's Jabari Smith Jr. would be going to Orlando.

Instead, Banchero was the first to hear his name called. Chet Holmgren, a center from Gonzaga, went to the Oklahoma City Thunder with the No. 2 pick, and Smith was taken by the Houston Rockets with the No. 3 pick. At No. 4, the Sacramento Kings picked Iowa forward Keegan Murray, and at No. 5, the Detroit Pistons picked Purdue guard Jaden Ivey to round out the top five.

Our NBA experts talk about the most important things they learned on draft night, like which of the top three picks will have the best first season. How about the big deals that happened on Thursday?

Both the Rockets and the Pistons started making moves days before the drafts of Smith and Ivey. The Rockets gave the Dallas Mavericks the No. 26 pick and four players whose contracts were about to end in exchange for center Christian Wood. Forward Jerami Grant was sent to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for the No. 36 pick and future draft picks.

Even on draft night, there were still a lot of trades going on. Both the Pistons and the Rockets made more deals. In one of the biggest moves of the night, the Detroit Pistons traded with the New York Knicks and the Charlotte Hornets to get the No. 13 overall pick, Jalen Duren. In exchange, the Knicks sent point guard Kemba Walker to the Motor City.

The Philadelphia 76ers got in on the action by trading guard De'Anthony Melton to the Memphis Grizzlies for swingman Danny Green and the No. 23 overall pick.

Which trade before or on draft night will have the most effect? Which of the top three picks is most likely to be successful right away the following season? Which teams did not do well at the draft? After 58 names were called on the first night, our experts answer the most important questions and make bold predictions.

Which of the top three picks is most likely to be successful right away as a rookie?

Kevin Pelton: I like how Smith is both ready and in shape. Banchero will probably be asked to make a lot of offense for a weak Orlando team, which is something Houston does not need as much of with Jalen Green as their go-to guy. Also, I think the Rockets will force Smith's long 2-point shots off the dribble past the 3-point line, making him a better player.

Andrew Lopez: Banchero fits in well with Franz Wagner and Wendell Carter Jr. in front of him in Orlando. Banchero can play power forward and use the offensive skills that made him the surprising No. 1 pick. He is 6 feet 10 inches tall. ESPN Stats & Information says that Banchero is one of only two freshmen in the last 30 Division I seasons to have 600 points, 300 rebounds, and 100 assists in a single season. The other is Ben Simmons (LSU). Banchero should fit in well with the young core of Orlando's team.

Tim Bontemps: All three picks have a chance to be really good, but Banchero is the clear favorite to win NBA Rookie of the Year. He was already thought to be the most NBA-ready player in his class, and he is going to Orlando, which needs offense badly. He should always have the ball, and if he stays healthy, he will almost certainly put up big numbers.

Jeff Borzello: Banchero would have been my answer if he had gone as expected at No. 3, and he is still my answer now that he is going to Orlando as the first pick. The Magic have a number of playmakers in the backcourt who are better when they have the ball, but Banchero is good enough to be a focal point in the half court right away. He can score at all three levels, pass well for someone his size, and shoot well from the outside. In the NCAA tournament, he shot 52.6 percent from three-point range. He was the most ready for college as a freshman, and he is also the most ready for the NBA right now.

Israel Gutierrez: Banchero, and where he was drafted has nothing to do with it. It is because he is the best person to defend his position right now, which should keep him on the floor long enough to get good numbers. Smith can guard more than one spot, and he might be able to be counted on as a reliable defender on a switch. But, like Holmgren, NBA big men will take full advantage of Smith's skinny body next season.

2. Which team in this year's draft did you like best?

Lopez: Oklahoma City knew which players it wanted and went after them. After Orlando changed the draft at No. 1, the Thunder stayed true to what they wanted by taking Holmgren at No. 2. Instead of waiting for Ousmane Dieng to fall to them at No. 12, they traded three future first-round picks to New York for Dieng and then took Jalen Williams from Santa Clara with the No. 12 pick. The Thunder did not help their coaches, PR team, or fans by taking Arkansas's Jaylin Williams with the No. 34 pick, which will not be confusing to anyone.

Gutierrez: Detroit. After trading Jerami Grant before the draft, the Pistons made it clear that they would be building around a young core and maybe Deandre Ayton in free agency. If that is the case, Cade Cunningham, Saddiq Bey, and the No. 5 pick Jaden Ivey at guard would be a good place to start. Ivey adds some flair that Cunningham, who is more quiet, does not have. Ivey and Cunningham could be a very dangerous team in a few years if they can find a way to work well together. A team that needs toughness up front also needed to get Jalen Duren.

Bontemps: For Detroit to get Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren from the Jerami Grant deal is a pretty good haul, especially since all they had to do was take on Kemba Walker and give up the future first-round pick from Milwaukee. Ivey has a lot of potential and could play well with Cade Cunningham, while Duren adds speed and the chance to block shots inside. Now that they have money, the Pistons can spend it on free agents to keep adding to their young core.

Borzello: It seems like this could be the answer almost every year, but it is hard not to like what the Spurs did with their three first-round picks. Jeremy Sochan's stock has gone through the roof in the past year, and he went ninth. The player from Poland played his whole freshman year when he was only 18 years old, and he showed glimpses of how high he can go. He can guard multiple positions, is comfortable taking shots from the perimeter (even though his shooting percentage is low), and has shown he can buy into the team culture. The Spurs then got Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley, two young guards with a lot of promise. Branham was talked about early in the draft process as a possible lottery pick because he had a great second half at Ohio State, and his offensive skills should translate right away. As a freshman at Notre Dame, Wesley was not always good, but he is fast and will have time to improve his game.

Pelton: The Rockets tend to see things a lot like I do (probably because we are both influenced by statistical draft projections), and for the second year in a row, they drafted one of the players I thought was most underrated. This year, they picked LSU's Tari Eason at No. 17, and last year, they picked Alperen Sengun at No. 16. Before that, Houston was set up to take advantage of Smith's surprising drop to No. 3. Later, the Rockets picked guard TyTy Washington Jr. from Kentucky with the 29th pick and traded down to get two future second-round picks. I liked what Houston did overall.

Which team's draft night was the least exciting?

Bontemps: What the Knicks did was, for now, just confusing. It took me a full hour to figure out all of the moves they made. Basically, they traded the No. 11 pick, four second-round picks, and Walker for three future conditional first-round picks that are not likely to be as good as the No. 11 pick. The Knicks can now get rid of a lot of salary, which could make it easier for them to sign players like Jalen Brunson or Kyrie Irving in free agency. This was a confusing night for the Knicks and their fans until we know the whole story.

Lopez: Right now, it is the New York Knicks. New York started the night with the No. 11 pick and ended up trading it, along with four second-round picks and Kemba Walker, for three future first-round picks (protected 2023 picks from Detroit and Washington and a top-four protected Milwaukee first-rounder in 2025). The Washington pick is protected by the lottery, and the Pistons pick is protected by being in the top 18 next year. It is possible that neither one of them could move. It does give the Knicks more room in their salary cap this season, so if they can trade for Jalen Brunson or another guard, it will all work out.

Pelton: I do not think that Johnny Davis, a guard from Wisconsin, is a good fit for the Washington Wizards. Davis is most dangerous when he scores a lot of points off the dribble. Pairing him with a player who can do the same thing more efficiently does not seem like a good use of the No. 10 pick, assuming the Wizards re-sign Bradley Beal, who can become an unrestricted free agent.

Borzello: I do not think there were any bad drafts, but the moves made by the Thunder and Grizzlies in the first round were surprising. Chet Holmgren was a no-brainer, but trading three first-round picks to the Knicks for Ousmane Dieng at No. 11 that were all heavily protected was a surprise. Even though Jalen Williams' stock has continued to rise, taking him at No. 12 seemed a bit early. David Roddy and Jake LaRavia will be able to help the Grizzlies because they can both shoot and do other things, but they both felt a little early. Roddy did not do well at the combine, and it is not clear how good of a defender he will be. LaRavia had a great season at Wake Forest, so it was a surprise that they gave up Nos. 22 and 29 to move him up three spots. But the pick of Kennedy Chandler in the second round was a great value.

Gutierrez: The Hornets. So far, Charlotte's offseason has not been the best. After missing the playoffs for the second year in a row, Miles Bridges stirred up trouble with a post on social media, and Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson backed out of a deal to be the next head coach. Then, on Thursday, the Hornets sent pick No. 13, big man Jalen Duren, to Detroit in exchange for a first-round pick in 2025. Huh?

Which trade before or on draft night will have the most effect?

Borzello: I really like everything the Rockets have done in the last few days. In the Christian Wood trade, getting a first-round pick made a difference on Thursday. They got all three of their first-round picks right and got two second-round picks in return. Smith and Jalen Green should work well together to score, and Smith will not have to score a lot on Day 1 because Kevin Porter Jr. is also on the team. At No. 17, the Rockets picked up Tari Eason, who is one of the best defenders in the league. After trading down from No. 26 to No. 29, getting TyTy Washington at No. 29 was a steal. Before he hurt his ankle in January, he was thought to be a lottery pick all season. Washington can make plays in pick-and-rolls, and when he was healthy, he made 40% of his 3-point shots. This month, the rebuilding of the Rockets made a lot of progress.

Lopez: The Philadelphia 76ers traded Colorado State forward David Roddy, who they drafted with the No. 23 pick, and Danny Green, who tore his ACL in the 2022 playoffs, for De'Anthony Melton, who can contribute right away next season. Last season, Melton, who is 24 years old, averaged 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds for the Memphis Grizzlies, which were both career highs. He was able to play more minutes off the ball with the Grizzlies, which helped him do this.

Bontemps: It could be that deal, depending on what the Knicks do. But I will go with Philadelphia making De'Anthony Melton out of Danny Green and the No. 23 pick. Daryl Morey, the president of basketball operations for the 76ers, did a great job when he traded Green, who is almost certain to miss the season because of a knee injury, for a young, athletic wing player named Raymond Melton. Melton is a great fit as a defender next to James Harden and Tyrese Maxey, making him a great fit for the trade.

Pelton: The deal between the Hornets, the Knicks, and the Pistons is very interesting because of what it means for free agency. It put New York one step closer to being able to make a big offer to Mavericks point guard Jalen Brunson. It also gave Detroit Jalen Duren, a center who might keep the Pistons from going after restricted free agent Deandre Ayton. Could the Pistons instead try to sign Miles Bridges, who is a restricted free agent for the Charlotte Hornets? The Hornets may have helped make that happen without realizing it.

Gutierrez says that the Blazers can bounce back from a bad season and become a top-six seed in one year if they have Grant, Damian Lillard is healthy, and they make one more frontcourt upgrade. If Anfernee Simons can still play well and the rest of the team is healthy, this team should at least be able to keep up with the Denver Nuggets and Minnesota Timberwolves.

5. I am going to take a big chance and say that Jabari Smith will win the Rookie of the Year award. I know I said Banchero is more likely to be successful right away, but Smith should do better. Also, a slight on draft night should give Smith even more reason to have a great season. Smith will be able to grow and learn along with 2021 rookies Jalen Green, Josh Christopher, Alperen Sengun, and Usman Garuba. Most importantly, he will be able to take shots. Houston is currently rebuilding from the ground up, and Smith should be able to shine.

Pelton: As a second-round pick, E.J. Liddell made the All-Rookie team, just like his New Orleans Pelicans teammate Herb Jones.

Gutierrez says that Dyson Daniels will play on a Pelicans team that finishes in the top four in the Western Conference. The No. 8 pick has the size and defensive skills to make an immediate impact, and he also has a high IQ that should help a well-rounded New Orleans team.

Borzello: Even though Jaden Hardy was picked in the second round, he is one of the most important players in the draft. Less than a year ago, Hardy was expected to be one of this class's game-changers and a top-three draft pick. Then he had an up-and-down season with the G League Ignite, scoring 17.7 points but only making 35.1 percent of his field goals and 26.9 percent of his 3-pointers. At his best, Hardy could be one of the best pure scorers in the draft. He will not have to do anything but score in Dallas. With Luka Doncic and Spencer Dinwiddie taking care of the ball, Hardy can just go out and make shots. It works well for him.

Bontemps: One day, Shaedon Sharpe will make the Trail Blazers look smart for picking him seventh overall. I am not Jonathan Givony, who does a great job with our drafts, but Sharpe has a lot of potential and could become a big-time wing player. Portland was smart to take a big chance on him instead of trying to win right away.
